In an interview with VladTV, Spears criticized the decision to draft Bronny with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and grant him a four-year contract worth nearly $8 million. “We went from Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaq, Kareem, Kobe, Worthy, to now Bronny James and nepotism,” Spears remarked. “Come on, man. The Lakers are a joke.”

Although Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka have highlighted Bronny’s defensive potential and their plans to develop him into a well-rounded player, many fans and analysts view Bronny’s signing as a move to placate LeBron.
