On Wednesday, the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production was updated on the quality of cars produced by Pakistani automakers. During the meeting, chaired by Senator Aon Abbas, officials from the Engineering Development Board (EDB) reported that the cars manufactured in Pakistan meet international standards. They noted that the only exceptions are two locally made models that do not come equipped with airbags.

Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, highlighted that up to 65 percent of the components in locally assembled cars are sourced from within Pakistan. However, he pointed out that the high production costs are a significant barrier to exporting these vehicles. Saleem Mandviwalla, another member of the committee, supported this view, emphasizing that the cost of producing local cars remains high. Additionally, the committee requested a detailed report on the Electric Vehicles Policy, underscoring the importance of this sector in the context of Pakistan’s automotive industry.
