Chinese Researchers Create Brain-on-a-Chip to Advance Autonomous Robotics

Chinese researchers have unveiled a groundbreaking brain-on-a-chip intelligent interaction system, known as MetaBOC, marking a significant advancement in brain-computer interface technology. This system enables a brain organoid to autonomously control robots for tasks such as obstacle avoidance, tracking, and grasping, akin to functions inspired by various brain-like computing processes.

The MetaBOC system comprises two main components: an electrode chip and in vitro-cultured brain tissue. The brain organoid, cultivated through stem cell technology, exhibits intelligent functionalities akin to those of a biological brain. The electrode chip allows scientists to control the organoid, enabling it to send signals externally and perform specific functions.

Unlike traditional approaches that primarily rely on human or other biological brains as experimental subjects, brain-on-a-chip technology represents a pivotal advancement in brain-computer interfaces. Ming Dong, vice president of Tianjin University, emphasized that this research holds transformative potential for cutting-edge fields like hybrid intelligence and brain-like computing.

The study, a collaborative effort between Tianjin University and the Southern University of Science and Technology, was published in the prestigious international journal Brain.
