Pakistan dismisses US resolution on February 8 general elections as neither constructive nor objective

In response to a resolution passed by the US House of Representatives calling for an investigation into Pakistan’s recent general elections, the Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch expressed Pakistan’s disappointment, describing the resolution as lacking in constructiveness and objectivity. Baloch emphasized that the resolution stemmed from an incomplete understanding of Pakistan’s political landscape and electoral processes.

Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to democratic values, including constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law, Baloch asserted that such values are integral to Pakistan’s national interest. She underscored Pakistan’s preference for constructive dialogue and engagement based on mutual respect and understanding, stating that resolutions like these do not contribute positively to bilateral relations.

Baloch expressed hope that the US Congress would instead focus on enhancing Pakistan-US ties through collaborative efforts that benefit both nations and their people. The resolution passed by the US House of Representatives, with a significant majority, called for investigations into alleged electoral interference and irregularities during Pakistan’s February 8, 2024, general elections. It condemned actions aimed at intimidating the public and disrupting communication services during the electoral process.
