Imran Riaz Khan released as Lahore Court dismisses case due to lack of evidence

Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan was released by Lahore police today following his exoneration from a recent high-profile legal battle. The saga began with Riaz’s apprehension at Allama Iqbal International Airport, where he was accused of monetary fraud just before departing for Hajj, an event captured dramatically on social media.

Initially detained and facing demands for release from political quarters like PTI, Riaz appeared in court at Model Town Court. Prosecutors sought a seven-day remand citing a Rs0.25 billion claim against him, but Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Kamran Zafar deferred judgment. Ultimately, Riaz was acquitted of the fraud charges on Thursday, marking a legal victory.

However, another legal issue arose as Riaz faced allegations of obstructing police duties near Lahore airport, involving damage to a barrier. In a subsequent hearing before Judicial Magistrate Hafiz Kashif today, prosecutors sought a 10-day remand based on Riaz’s alleged disclosures implicating accomplices. After careful review, the magistrate dismissed the charges due to insufficient evidence.

In his ruling, Magistrate Kashif highlighted the lack of proof that Riaz was driving during the incident or used force against public servants, with no eyewitnesses supporting the prosecution’s claims. Riaz’s legal team welcomed the decision, citing it as proof of justice prevailing against unfounded allegations and affirming their client’s innocence.

This legal episode adds to Riaz’s turbulent journey, characterized by past arrests and legal confrontations amid controversies related to his journalistic activities. His experiences underscore broader themes of legal accountability and media scrutiny in Pakistan’s evolving landscape.
