BEIJING – China has witnessed a rise in cases of influenza-like illness, leading to respiratory problems among individuals and instances of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in its northern region.
Reports indicate that the illness is spreading rapidly, prompting the government to issue a red alert and gather data from schools and hospitals.
In response to the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has formally requested detailed information from China regarding the surge in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children.

China has established systems to monitor trends in influenza, influenza-like illnesses, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2, reporting to platforms like the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System.
The WHO, in a statement, mentioned, “We have also requested further information about recent trends in the circulation of known pathogens, including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and mycoplasma pneumoniae, and the current burden on health care systems.” The organization is actively engaged with clinicians and scientists through existing technical partnerships and networks in China.
Earlier this month, the National Health Commission of China reported a surge in respiratory diseases in the country. Chinese authorities attributed this rise to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae (common in younger children), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (causing COVID-19). Emphasis was placed on enhanced disease surveillance in healthcare facilities and community settings, along with strengthening the health system’s capacity to handle patients.
