ISLAMABAD – Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Pakistan’s interim prime minister, formally inaugurated the advanced National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) on Thursday.

The NEOC is designed to facilitate coordinated responses to future natural disasters. Located at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Headquarters, the center will also contribute to disaster risk reduction and minimizing losses.

The prime minister commended the establishment of the NEOC and stressed the significance of disaster-resilient infrastructure and policy frameworks. He pointed out that despite being one of the lowest global contributors to carbon emissions, Pakistan is among the countries most affected by climate change.

He reiterated, “Climate change is a genuine challenge that will continue to impact our future generations unless we take concrete measures.”

The prime minister also praised the collaborative efforts of all government institutions, particularly the NDMA, during the devastating floods of 2022. He noted that nearly one-third of the country’s population was affected by the 2022 floods, resulting in an estimated economic loss of USD 30 billion.

He emphasized the need for the world to step up and assist developing nations like Pakistan in addressing the adverse effects of climate change. The prime minister also commended the role of the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) in managing both the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 floods.
