The US Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicenter was located in the High Atlas Mountains, at a depth of 18.5 kilometers. The tremors occurred at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9 aftershock a few minutes later.

International media outlets have indicated that the casualty count stands at approximately 300, with expectations of it rising. Most of the casualties are reported to be in remote hilly areas that are challenging for rescue teams to access.
