A Karachi resident has approached the court seeking Rs178.7 million in compensation after allegedly losing an eye in an accident linked to the ongoing BRT Red Line construction project. The petitioner has requested legal action against the project director and the contractor, claiming negligence and inadequate public safety measures.
According to the petition, the incident occurred in 2025 after the petitioner returned to Pakistan from Hajj. He alleged that barriers placed along University Road during the BRT Red Line construction created dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
The petitioner argued that the construction barriers lacked proper reflectors, warning signs and other safety features. His lawyer told the court that the absence of adequate safety measures contributed directly to the accident, which allegedly resulted in the loss of one eye and serious facial injuries.
The petition has requested the court to direct the Sindh government and the BRT Red Line administration to pay Rs178.7 million in compensation. The claimed amount covers medical expenses, permanent disability, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from the incident.
According to the petitioner, the authorities responsible for the BRT Red Line project failed to implement sufficient public safety measures during construction. He maintained that the alleged negligence placed road users at unnecessary risk and ultimately caused the accident.
The court has been asked to examine the allegations and determine whether the project authorities and contractor are liable for the injuries sustained by the petitioner. The matter will proceed in accordance with legal procedures after the respondents submit their replies.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah recently conducted an early morning inspection of major infrastructure projects in Karachi, including the BRT Red Line corridor. During the visit, he directed officials to speed up construction while ensuring quality standards and transparency in project execution.
The chief minister also instructed the relevant authorities to complete all mixed-traffic lanes along the BRT Red Line corridor within two months, reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to improving Karachi’s public transport infrastructure.
