Thomas Tuchel is expected to remain England’s head coach despite the Three Lions’ heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Football Association continuing to back the German manager following the semifinal defeat to Argentina.
England were on the verge of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave the team the lead. However, Argentina produced a dramatic comeback as Enzo Fernandez equalised before Lautaro Martinez scored a stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory and book the defending champions’ place in the final.
Following the defeat, Tuchel accepted responsibility for the result but stood by his tactical decisions, insisting he had no regrets about the approach taken during the match.
Despite the disappointment, the Football Association has reportedly maintained full confidence in Tuchel and remains committed to its long-term plans under the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss.
Tuchel also reaffirmed his commitment to England’s national team, stressing that his focus has already shifted toward preparing the squad for UEFA Euro 2028. Earlier this year, he signed a contract extension, underlining the FA’s faith in his leadership despite the World Cup setback.
Speaking ahead of England’s final match of the tournament, Tuchel urged his players to finish their campaign positively by defeating France in the third-place playoff.
He reminded the squad that there was still an opportunity to end the World Cup with a victory and build momentum for future competitions.
The England manager also expressed excitement about continuing to develop the current group of players, believing they have the potential to achieve major success in the coming years, particularly with England set to host UEFA Euro 2028.
Although the World Cup dream has ended in disappointment once again, Tuchel believes the experience gained during the tournament will help strengthen the squad ahead of future challenges.
England will now face France in the FIFA World Cup third-place playoff at Miami Stadium on Saturday as they look to conclude their campaign with a win.
Meanwhile, Argentina will take on European champions Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Lionel Scaloni’s side will attempt to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022.
