NHMP Issues Urgent Travel Warning as Heavy Rains Hit Pakistan

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued a nationwide travel advisory, urging motorists and tourists to avoid non-essential travel as heavy rain, strong winds, and poor weather conditions continue to affect several parts of Pakistan. The warning comes amid increasing risks of flooding, landslides, and reduced visibility on major highways and motorways.

According to the advisory, widespread rainfall is expected to continue across many regions, including the Hazara division, where recent downpours have already disrupted traffic and created dangerous driving conditions. Flooding, waterlogging, and poor visibility have affected movement on the GT Road and sections of the motorway network, prompting authorities to advise extra caution.

NHMP officials warned that continuous rainfall could make roads increasingly hazardous due to slippery surfaces and limited visibility. Motorists have been instructed to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and keep headlights switched on while driving during rain. The department said following these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of traffic accidents in severe weather.

The advisory also highlights increased dangers for people planning to visit northern and mountainous areas. Authorities warned that persistent rainfall could trigger landslides, falling rocks, and other natural hazards that may block roads and threaten the safety of travelers. Tourists have been advised to postpone unnecessary trips until weather conditions improve.

Officials further cautioned that seasonal streams and water channels may overflow without warning during heavy rainfall. Drivers have been strongly advised not to attempt crossing flooded roads, bridges, or waterlogged sections of highways, as rapidly rising water levels can create life-threatening situations and sweep away vehicles.

NHMP also reminded motorists to remain fully focused while driving and avoid using mobile phones behind the wheel. The department stressed that distractions become even more dangerous during adverse weather conditions, when quick reactions are essential to prevent accidents. Drivers are encouraged to remain alert and follow all traffic regulations throughout their journey.

Before starting any trip, travelers are advised to check the latest weather forecasts and road conditions. The NHMP said commuters can obtain real-time traffic updates and emergency assistance by calling the motorway police helpline 130 or following the department’s official social media platforms for the latest information.

Authorities continue to monitor the weather situation closely and have urged the public to cooperate with safety instructions as monsoon rains persist across different parts of the country. The advisory aims to reduce travel-related risks and ensure the safety of motorists during the ongoing spell of severe weather.
