Pakistan May Face Higher Power Bills as New Tariff Proposed

Electricity consumers across Pakistan could face another increase in their monthly power bills as a proposal to raise tariffs by 82 paisas per unit has been submitted under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) mechanism. The proposed increase, if approved, would be reflected in electricity bills issued in July, adding further pressure on households already dealing with rising living costs.

According to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the request was submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which is responsible for managing electricity procurement on behalf of power distribution companies. The regulator has scheduled a public hearing on June 30 to examine the proposal and review the relevant fuel cost data.

In its petition, the CPPA stated that the average fuel cost of electricity generation during May stood at Rs9.25 per unit. Based on this calculation, the agency has requested an adjustment of 82 paisas per unit to recover additional fuel expenses incurred during the month.

Sources indicate that approval of the proposed adjustment could place an extra financial burden of nearly Rs12 billion on electricity consumers nationwide. The increase would affect millions of households and businesses at a time when many are already struggling with inflation and higher utility costs.

NEPRA will assess the submitted figures, generation costs, and supporting calculations during the June 30 hearing before making a final determination. The authority will decide whether the proposed fuel cost adjustment should be passed on to consumers through upcoming electricity bills.

The latest request comes amid continued concerns over energy affordability in Pakistan. With electricity prices remaining a major challenge for consumers and businesses alike, the regulator’s decision will be closely watched. If approved, the increase would add to the financial pressures facing citizens as they navigate an already difficult economic environment.
