The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert for several northern and upper regions of Pakistan, warning residents and travelers about the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, flash flooding, and landslides in the coming days.
According to the authority, rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in Islamabad, various districts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Officials have also cautioned that some locations may experience hailstorms, which could cause damage to weak structures, vehicles, crops, and other exposed property.
The weather alert highlights concerns regarding mountainous areas, where intense rainfall could increase the risk of landslides and glacial lake outburst floods. Such incidents may block roads, disrupt transportation networks, and create difficulties for residents and tourists traveling through these regions.
NDMA identified several high-risk areas that may be affected by landslides, including Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit, Chilas, Astore, Shigar, Chitral, Kalam, Upper Kohistan, and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities warned that major transportation routes could face disruptions due to adverse weather conditions.
Important road networks that may be impacted include sections of the Karakoram Highway, Naran Road, and the Jaglot-Skardu Road. Travelers have been advised to remain cautious and stay updated on weather conditions before planning journeys through these routes.
The weather alert also covers popular tourist destinations such as Kalam, Kundol, Arang Kel, Dasu, Patan, and Chitral Valley. Visitors planning trips to these areas have been urged to monitor official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
To minimize potential risks, NDMA has directed provincial and regional authorities in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and AJK to remain vigilant. Relevant departments have been instructed to implement precautionary measures in vulnerable locations and along key highways.
Officials emphasized that timely preparedness and public awareness are essential to reducing the impact of severe weather. Citizens are encouraged to follow official updates and take necessary precautions as the weather alert remains in effect across several northern regions of the country.
