PMD Warns of Intense Heatwave Across Country

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a nationwide heatwave alert, warning that temperatures may rise sharply across southern, central, and upper parts of Pakistan over the coming days. According to the forecast, heatwave conditions are expected in southern and central regions from May 7 to May 11, while upper areas may experience extreme heat from May 8 to May 10.

The Met Office said daytime temperatures could rise to dangerous levels between 46°C and 50°C in several districts, including Dadu, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Turbat, and Panjgur. Officials warned that these areas could face extremely harsh daytime conditions during the forecast period.

Temperatures are also likely to remain between 43°C and 47°C in several districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ismail Khan, and Bannu. Authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.

In upper parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Peshawar, temperatures are expected to range between 39°C and 43°C. Meanwhile, very hot and humid weather is forecast for Karachi, where temperatures are likely to remain between 35°C and 38°C.

The Met Office further stated that a shallow westerly weather system is expected to enter upper regions on the evening or night of May 10 and may continue until May 13. This system is likely to bring some relief from the ongoing heatwave in northern and upper areas of the country.

Authorities have urged the public, especially children, women, and senior citizens, to take precautionary measures during the intense weather conditions. Citizens have been advised to avoid direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and limit unnecessary outdoor exposure. Farmers have also been instructed to manage crop activities carefully and ensure proper care for livestock during the extreme heat.
