A proposal linked to U.S. political circles has sparked debate over the FIFA World Cup 2026 lineup. A senior envoy to Donald Trump suggested that Iran could be replaced by Italy in the tournament. The idea has drawn global attention due to its political and sporting implications.
The suggestion was made by U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli. He reportedly raised the proposal with both Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino. The discussion centers on whether changes could be made to the final team list.
Zampolli said Italy would be a strong alternative. He highlighted the country’s football legacy and global popularity. Italy is a four-time World Cup champion with a long competitive history.
However, Italy failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The team lost a playoff match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This marks its third consecutive absence from the tournament.
In contrast, Iran has officially qualified for the competition. The team secured its place for the fourth straight World Cup appearance. Iran is currently preparing for its opening match.
The proposal comes amid ongoing concerns related to Iran’s participation. Iranian officials had requested changes to their match location due to regional tensions. However, FIFA rejected the request.
FIFA has confirmed that Iran remains part of the tournament. Officials have stated that the schedule will proceed as planned unless official changes occur.
Reports suggest that Donald Trump was informed about the idea as part of discussions on tournament arrangements. However, no official decision has been made regarding any team replacement.
Under FIFA rules, any withdrawal could allow a replacement team. This decision would fall under Article Six of tournament regulations.
If a change is needed, the Asian Football Confederation may recommend another team from the region. The United Arab Emirates has been mentioned as a possible candidate. The team has only one previous World Cup appearance in 1990.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It is scheduled to begin on June 11. Iran is set to play its opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
