Italian energy company Eni has announced a major Gas discovery off the coast of Indonesia. The new find is expected to significantly increase the company’s production in the country over the next few years.
According to initial estimates, the offshore site near East Kalimantan holds around 5 trillion cubic feet of Gas. It also contains about 300 million barrels of condensate, a liquid hydrocarbon. The discovery is located nearly 70 kilometres from the coast and is considered one of the largest in recent years.
Officials say the new Gas reserves could triple Eni’s production in Indonesia by 2028. Current output stands between 600 and 700 million standard cubic feet per day. This is expected to rise to 2,000 MMSCFD by 2028 and further increase to 3,000 MMSCFD by 2030.
Indonesia’s Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia described the discovery as a major breakthrough. He said the project will also produce around 90,000 barrels of condensate by 2028. This could rise to 150,000 barrels in the following years.
The government believes higher condensate output may reduce oil imports. This will help improve energy security in the country. Indonesia already produces more Gas than it consumes, but demand continues to grow.
The discovery comes at a time when global energy markets are under pressure. Rising tensions in the Middle East have pushed oil prices higher. Like many countries, Indonesia is looking for ways to secure stable energy supplies.
President Prabowo Subianto recently held meetings with global leaders. He discussed energy cooperation with Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron. These talks focused on long-term energy security and future partnerships.
Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia. Despite being an oil producer, it still imports fuel to meet domestic needs. The government has introduced fuel rationing and conservation measures to manage supply.
Recent data shows natural Gas plays a key role in Indonesia’s energy mix. It accounts for a significant share of total energy supply and electricity generation. The latest discovery highlights the country’s untapped potential in the oil and gas sector.

Officials say this development will support economic growth and reduce reliance on imports. It also strengthens Indonesia’s position in global energy markets. The new Gas reserves are expected to benefit both domestic use and exports in the coming years.
