Pakistan cricket star Babar Azam will not play in the upcoming Bangladesh series or the National T20 tournament. The national selection committee confirmed his absence due to fitness concerns. The announcement came during a press briefing in Lahore, where selectors discussed team performance, player fitness, and future plans.
Selection committee member Aqib Javed stated that Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman’s injuries came to light after the recent World Cup. The committee plans to review whether their fitness was properly monitored during the tournament. Javed emphasized that the team’s lineup is decided by the captain and coach, while the committee only selects the squad.
The selection committee defended Pakistan’s World Cup performance. Javed explained that missing the semi-finals was mainly due to net run rate. Pakistan lost only one match in the Super Eight stage, while another match was washed out due to rain. He stressed that the team showed promise in previous series, including victories against England, South Africa, and Australia.
Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed highlighted that player selection depends on performance, not personal preferences. Young talent from domestic cricket is being considered for national call-ups. Players like Shamyl Hussain have impressed in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and are expected to get opportunities.
The selectors emphasized stability in team selection. Aqib Javed noted that Pakistan frequently changes players, unlike teams such as India and Bangladesh. He said constant overhauls after failures can be harmful and that gradual improvements are more effective.
Modern technology now supports selection decisions. Matches are recorded and analyzed ball-by-ball, allowing the committee to make data-driven choices. Misbah added that technical coaching and video analysis are improving player performance over time.
