Punjab to Buy Wheat at Rs3,500 Per 40kg Under New PPP Model

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a major wheat procurement initiative, setting the purchase price at Rs3,500 per 40 kilogrammes for farmers across the province. The move is aimed at strengthening strategic reserves while ensuring stable incomes for growers.

According to the announcement, the provincial government plans to procure 30 lakh metric tons of wheat from local farmers during the upcoming procurement season. Officials say the large-scale purchase will help secure Punjab’s wheat stockpile and stabilize supply in the domestic market.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the chief minister highlighted that Punjab has become the first province to introduce a public-private partnership (PPP) model for wheat procurement. The initiative is designed to modernize the purchasing system and improve transparency in the process.

Maryam Nawaz stated that 35 domestic and international companies have already been pre-qualified to participate in the programme. Their involvement is expected to enhance efficiency, logistics management, and storage capacity under the new framework.

Under the revised policy, authorities aim to strike a balance between offering fair compensation to farmers and maintaining adequate wheat reserves for future consumption needs. Officials believe the PPP model will reduce administrative bottlenecks and speed up procurement operations.

The Punjab government maintains that the initiative will bring stability to the local wheat market, protect farmers from price fluctuations, and strengthen the province’s food security framework ahead of future demand pressures.
