Health Experts Warn Against Fried, Sugary Foods in Ramadan

Health experts have advised the public to limit the consumption of fried foods and sugary drinks at sehri and iftar during Ramadan, cautioning that unhealthy dietary habits can lead to heartburn, acidity, and other digestive problems.

Dr. Rimsha Siddiqui, a nutritionist at Aga Khan University Hospital, emphasized that individuals suffering from diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease should consult their doctors before observing fasts. She stressed that people with pre-existing medical conditions must take extra precautions to avoid health complications during the holy month.

Dr. Siddiqui highlighted the importance of not skipping sehri, explaining that the pre-dawn meal plays a crucial role in sustaining energy levels throughout the day. She recommended incorporating fiber-rich foods such as whole wheat flour, barley, porridge, and brown bread, along with protein sources like eggs, meat, and lentils. According to her, fiber helps maintain stable blood sugar levels during fasting hours.

For iftar, she suggested minimizing sugary beverages and cutting down on sugar, jaggery, and honey. She also advised increasing water intake and avoiding excessive fried foods to reduce the risk of digestive discomfort.

Healthier iftar options, she noted, include fruits, vegetables, kebabs, and homemade haleem or porridge. Additionally, she recommended that heart patients, individuals with high blood pressure, and diabetics limit beef consumption and opt for lean meats instead. Mutton may be eaten in moderation three to four times a week, while eggs and lentils serve as healthier protein alternatives.
