New Grading System in Karachi Fail Status Replaced with U Grade

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has announced a new grading system for matriculation exams, marking a major shift in student assessment. The change aims to make evaluation more transparent and standardized.

According to BSEK, the revised grading system will be implemented from the current academic year for Class 9 students. Class 10 candidates will follow the new system starting in 2027. The minimum passing marks have been set at 40 percent.

Under the new structure, the traditional “fail” status has been replaced with a “U grade.” Students scoring between 96 and 100 percent will receive an A++ grade. Those scoring below 40 percent will fall under the U category. Only students with 40 percent or above will be considered successful.

The board has also decided to introduce a GPA system on an interim basis. Students failing to meet the minimum requirements will be required to appear in supplementary exams. This ensures that all students have a fair opportunity to pass and improve their scores.

BSEK officials said the new grading system is designed to encourage students to perform better while maintaining academic standards. Schools are being advised to familiarize students and teachers with the changes to ensure smooth implementation.

Education experts have welcomed the move, saying that the new system provides a clearer evaluation of student performance. It highlights excellence for top performers while giving students who score below expectations a defined category to improve.

The board confirmed that guidance and support will be provided to schools to implement the GPA and grading system effectively. Authorities believe the reforms will align Karachi’s education standards with modern assessment practices and promote academic growth.
