Biman Bangladesh Airlines, an international airline, is set to expand its direct flights to Pakistan after receiving approval from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The airline has been cleared to operate three weekly flights on the Dhaka–Karachi route, adding a third service to its current schedule.
Currently, the international airline operates two weekly flights between Dhaka and Karachi using a Boeing 737. The carrier will assess passenger demand, market conditions, and commercial feasibility before finalizing the additional flight frequency.
The expansion comes shortly after direct air travel between Pakistan and Bangladesh resumed following a long suspension. On January 29, Biman operated its first Dhaka-to-Karachi flight in 14 years. Flight BG341 departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:15 pm and landed at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport at 11:03 pm, where it was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute.
Officials in Karachi described the return of the route as an important step for improving connectivity between the two countries. In Dhaka, the flight’s departure was celebrated as a major milestone. The ceremony included senior officials such as Bangladesh’s civil aviation and tourism adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin and Pakistan’s high commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Haider.
During the launch, Bangladesh’s aviation leadership highlighted the role of the route in boosting tourism, business travel, and people-to-people contact. The adviser also mentioned that Biman, as an international airline, plans to gradually increase flight frequency and reduce fares to make travel more affordable.
Pakistan’s high commissioner linked the resumption of flights to broader efforts by both countries to strengthen bilateral ties. Passengers on the inaugural flight welcomed the restored air link, calling it a meaningful development that enhances convenience and regional cooperation.
