Arsenal Legend Arsène Wenger has described Pakistan as a major untapped football market with huge potential. The former Arsenal manager shared his views during an interview with Pakistan Television. He was speaking on the sidelines of the 56th World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos.
Wenger currently serves as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development. He said Pakistan’s large population offers a strong base for discovering football talent. According to him, the key challenge is proper organization and structured development.
Arsenal Legend Wenger noted that Pakistan has a population of around 250 million people. This creates a wide talent pool for football. However, he said this potential needs direction, planning, and investment. He added that FIFA is discussing plans to help Pakistan develop its football structure.
One major idea under discussion is the establishment of a football academy in Pakistan. Wenger said an academy would be an important first step. He explained that such an academy could help train young players professionally. It would also support long-term grassroots and youth football development.
Wenger revealed that he has already met with Pakistanis regarding the academy plan. These meetings focused on cooperation and future steps. He stressed that youth development is the foundation of successful football nations.
When asked about visiting Pakistan, Wenger did not give a fixed date. However, he said he hopes to travel when his schedule allows. He showed interest in seeing football development efforts in the country firsthand.
Wenger was not the only FIFA official to talk about Pakistan at Davos. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also shared positive remarks. Infantino said he plans to visit Pakistan in the near future. He claimed he has already committed to the visit during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Infantino praised the newly elected leadership of the Pakistan Football Federation. He said the federation’s president is doing a “fantastic job.” He also called Pakistan a “great football country” with strong potential.
The FIFA president added that the global body wants Pakistan to compete at the top level in Asia. He said FIFA is ready to support Pakistan’s journey in football growth.
