The federal government of Pakistan has banned the general import of chloroform, restricting it exclusively to pharmaceutical companies.
According to an official notification from the Ministry of Commerce, amendments were made to the Import Policy Order 2022. The changes were approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal Cabinet.
Under the new regulations, only pharmaceutical companies and related sectors can import chloroform. Companies must obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) before importing the chemical.
Officials stated that chloroform is considered harmful to human health and the environment. The government’s decision aims to prevent misuse and limit the movement of the chemical within Pakistan.
The Ministry of Commerce said the restrictions ensure chloroform is used solely for legitimate pharmaceutical and medical purposes. Authorities stressed that strict compliance with the regulations is mandatory.
By restricting the import of chloroform, Pakistan is taking steps to safeguard public health and reduce environmental hazards. Officials emphasized that any company importing chloroform without a DRAP-issued NOC will face legal action.
The government encouraged industries to follow proper procedures to avoid violations. This measure also aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to regulate the import and use of potentially dangerous chemicals.
Experts believe that limiting chloroform imports to authorized pharmaceutical sectors will reduce health risks and prevent illegal usage in non-medical industries. The move reflects Pakistan’s commitment to monitoring hazardous substances and enforcing strict safety standards.
Authorities continue to review other chemicals for stricter regulations. The aim is to maintain public safety, protect the environment, and ensure chemicals are used only for their intended purposes.
