Among the convicts is Kaleemullah Khan, a newly-elected member of the Provincial Assembly backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The individuals have been found guilty of various offenses, including obstructing roads, attacking sensitive installations in Gujranwala Cantt, and other charges. They have been sentenced to five years in prison under eight different sections of the law.
The judgment was issued by the Gujranwala ATC following a three-month hearing of the May 9 case held at the Central Jail under tight security measures.
The riots erupted on May 9, 2023, when PTI supporters engaged in violent protests following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a corruption case. The enraged political activists also entered the Cantt area and caused damage to various public properties.
Additionally, they attacked sensitive installations in the Cantt, prompting a stern response from the federal government at the time, leading to the arrest of several prominent PTI leaders.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
