A moderate earthquake struck Swat and nearby regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday, causing panic among residents. The tremors were felt across several northern districts, prompting people to rush out of their homes in fear.
According to early reports, the earthquake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located in the Hindukush mountain range, at a depth of approximately 185 kilometers. The quake’s depth helped reduce its surface impact, which is why no major damage or injuries have been reported so far.
Residents in Swat, Shangla, and parts of Dir described the tremors as strong but brief. Many people recited verses from the Holy Quran while seeking safety in open spaces. Local disaster management authorities confirmed that all districts in the region remain safe and no emergency alerts have been issued.
Pakistan’s northern areas frequently experience such tremors due to their position near active tectonic plates. Experts say these mild to moderate quakes help release underground pressure, preventing larger earthquakes.
Officials have urged the public to remain calm but alert. They also advised residents to review safety procedures and avoid spreading misinformation online.
No damage to infrastructure, power supply, or communication networks has been reported. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have assured people that rescue teams are on standby in case of aftershocks.
