Around 100 prisoners at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi are reportedly HIV-positive, according to the jail superintendent.
Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig shared the information during a ceremony. The event marked the release of the Human Rights Commission’s annual prison data report.
Baig said around 8,000 prisoners are currently housed at Adiala Jail. The facility serves prisoners from two cities, increasing pressure on its capacity.
He explained that the prison population is expected to decrease soon. Construction work on Islamabad Jail is reportedly close to completion.
Once the new facility becomes operational, half of Adiala Jail’s prisoners will be transferred there. This move is expected to reduce the prison population by around 50 percent.
Baig also addressed concerns about overcrowding in Punjab’s prisons. He said there is no major overcrowding issue across the province.
According to him, Punjab has built 10 new prisons in recent years. Additional barracks have also been constructed at Adiala Jail.
The new barracks are aimed at improving accommodation facilities for prisoners. The measures are expected to help manage the large inmate population.
Baig said most prisoners at Adiala Jail were arrested by police on different charges. He noted that many inmates have the right to seek post-arrest bail.
The superintendent also discussed healthcare services available inside the prison. He said medical facilities are provided to all prisoners.
Adiala Jail currently has six male doctors and one female doctor. They are responsible for providing medical care to inmates.
Baig said prisoners with health concerns receive regular medical check-ups. Basic medical tests are also available inside the jail.
These facilities allow doctors to conduct initial assessments and provide necessary treatment. Prisoners can receive further medical attention when required.
The disclosure about HIV cases highlights the importance of healthcare services in correctional facilities. Proper medical monitoring is important for prisoners with infectious health conditions.
The reported HIV cases are among the health concerns being managed at the facility. Jail authorities say medical services remain available for the prison population.
The planned opening of Islamabad Jail could also reduce pressure on Adiala Jail. The transfer of prisoners is expected to lower its population substantially.
The move may provide additional space for inmates who remain at Adiala Jail. It could also make prison management easier for authorities.
