The Adiala Jail administration has rejected allegations that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and former first lady Bushra Bibi are being kept in solitary confinement, submitting separate reports to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ahead of a scheduled hearing.
The reports come as Imran Khan completes three years in Adiala Jail, where he is serving his sentence as a convicted prisoner. The petitions, filed by family members, allege that both prisoners are being held in isolation and denied proper facilities.
Jail denies solitary confinement allegations
According to the report submitted by the Adiala Jail superintendent, Imran Khan is not being kept in solitary confinement. The prison administration stated that the practice of solitary confinement has largely been discontinued and is no longer commonly used in prisons.
The report said Khan is serving his sentence in accordance with prison laws and regulations. As a better-class prisoner, he is entitled to additional facilities under the jail manual.
Authorities informed the court that Imran Khan has free movement during the day within a secure compound consisting of seven cells. The compound provides access to natural light, fresh air, exercise facilities, and privacy until evening.
The superintendent further stated that Khan is not restricted to a single cell and is not subjected to discriminatory treatment while in custody.
Medical care and daily facilities
The jail administration told the court that doctors examine Imran Khan three times every day, with additional medical check-ups arranged whenever necessary.
According to the report, a convicted prisoner prepares Khan’s preferred meals three times daily. Prison officials also inspect the food to ensure its quality.
The report added that newspapers and books are provided regularly, allowing the former prime minister access to reading material throughout his imprisonment.
Weekly meetings with Bushra Bibi
Prison authorities confirmed that Imran Khan is permitted to meet his wife, Bushra Bibi, every Tuesday in accordance with prison rules.
The report also referred to an inspection conducted on February 10 by amicus curiae Salman Safdar, stating that he found the prison accommodation satisfactory.
The superintendent argued that the allegations made by Aleema Khanum were based on assumptions rather than evidence and requested the Islamabad High Court to dismiss the petition.
Bushra Bibi also receives prison facilities
In a separate report, the jail administration similarly denied allegations that Bushra Bibi is being held in solitary confinement.
According to prison authorities, she has access to a spacious room, a courtyard, and a separate kitchen where she is free to move during the day. The report added that her accommodation provides natural light, fresh air, and privacy as required under prison regulations.
Officials also stated that two female warders remain assigned to her barracks at all times. They prepare her meals and assist with her daily requirements.
A female medical officer reportedly examines Bushra Bibi twice daily, while additional medical care is arranged whenever needed.
Jail rejects family’s allegations
The report further stated that senior female prison officials regularly visit Bushra Bibi to address any concerns and ensure her welfare.
According to the superintendent, the allegations made by Bushra Bibi’s daughter are factually incorrect and unsupported by evidence.
The jail administration maintained that both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are receiving all facilities allowed under prison rules and are not being held in solitary confinement.
The Islamabad High Court is scheduled to hear the petitions before Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro, with prison authorities requesting that the court dismiss the cases after reviewing the reports.
