Federal Government reinstates health insurance for journalists

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar recently announced the revival of a health insurance scheme specifically designed for journalists in Pakistan. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of the media community, acknowledging their crucial role in society.

During the launch ceremony, Minister Tarar emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to uplift journalists and media workers. He mentioned advocating to the prime minister for additional initiatives aimed at further enhancing their welfare and rights.

Tarar specifically addressed the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), urging them to safeguard the rights of media workers, including ensuring that outstanding dues are promptly disbursed. He proposed that such payments should be directly issued to journalists rather than routed through intermediaries like the Implementation Tribunal for Newspaper Employees (ITNE), streamlining the process and ensuring transparency.

The minister acknowledged the groundwork laid by former Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in initiating the health insurance scheme, which he is now advancing. Under the current plan, 5,000 journalists will receive medical coverage in the first phase, with an additional 10,000 journalists to be included in the subsequent phase. The project has been allocated Rs. 1 billion in the national budget to ensure its effective implementation.

Furthermore, Tarar advocated for expanding the insurance package to include journalists who have passed away due to unnatural causes, aiming to provide financial support to their bereaved families.

This announcement reflects the government’s proactive stance towards enhancing the welfare and protection of journalists, recognizing their indispensable role in the dissemination of information and upholding democratic principles in Pakistan.
