Elon Musk’s AI Company Teams Up with Dell to Develop Supercomputer

In a recent update, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and founder of xAI, announced on the social media platform X that Dell Technologies is actively involved in assembling half of the racks needed for the supercomputer being developed by his artificial intelligence startup, xAI. This supercomputer is intended to power the next generation of xAI’s AI chatbot, Grok.

According to reports from The Information in May, Musk had informed investors about xAI’s plans to construct this supercomputer, which is crucial for advancing the capabilities of their AI technologies. Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, also confirmed the collaboration in a separate post on X, mentioning their partnership with Nvidia to establish an “AI factory” specifically aimed at supporting xAI’s Grok chatbot.

Training AI models like Grok requires extensive computational power, necessitating tens of thousands of high-performance chips. Musk had earlier disclosed that training the Grok 2 model utilized around 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, with future iterations like Grok 3 expected to require up to 100,000 of these chips.

The timeline for this ambitious project aims to have the supercomputer operational by the fall of 2025, underscoring Musk’s vision to significantly enhance xAI’s capabilities in the AI sector. Founded last year, xAI represents Musk’s entry into AI development, competing directly with established entities like Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google’s Alphabet, where Musk himself co-founded OpenAI.
