WhatsApp is rolling out a new guest calling feature that allows people to join calls without creating an account. Guests can join directly through a web browser without downloading the application.
The feature aims to make it easier for users to connect with people who do not use WhatsApp. The company says guest calls are free, have no time limit, and remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
The new option supports both individual and group calls. Up to 32 participants can join a call, including guests who do not have WhatsApp accounts.
How WhatsApp Guest Calls Work
Only registered WhatsApp users can create guest call links. To generate a link, users need to open the Calls tab and tap the plus button.
They can then create a call link and share it with other participants. The recipient can open the link in a supported web browser without installing the app.
Guests must enter their names before joining. They will then enter a waiting room until the host approves their requests.
This approval process gives the host control over who enters the call. Hosts can also remove guests at any time or end the call for all participants.
Guest Calls Support Screen Sharing and Reactions
WhatsApp guest calls include several features available during regular calls. Participants can share their screens, react using emojis, and raise their hands.
However, guests will have limited access to certain functions. They cannot view other participants’ phone numbers or send messages during the call.
Guests also cannot invite additional people to join. The host remains responsible for managing access and controlling the meeting.
These restrictions help maintain control over guest participation. Users should create and share call links carefully to avoid unwanted access requests.
End-to-End Encryption Remains Available
WhatsApp says guest calls retain end-to-end encryption. This security feature is designed to protect call content from being accessed by unauthorised parties.
The web client generates a unique identifier used to encrypt each call. This system allows people without regular WhatsApp accounts to participate while maintaining the stated encryption protection.
The company has presented the feature as a way to make calling more accessible. Users can invite people who prefer not to install the app or register for an account.
WhatsApp Plans Calendar Integration
WhatsApp is also developing integrations with Google Calendar and Outlook. These integrations are expected to let users add call links directly to calendar invitations through a plugin.
People receiving calendar invitations will be able to join calls without creating WhatsApp accounts. The feature is expected later this year.
However, the calendar integration is still in development. Its wider availability will depend on the company’s rollout plans.
Guest Calling Feature Rolling Out Gradually
Guest calls are gradually becoming available on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS. The option may not appear immediately for every user.
WhatsApp has not announced a confirmed date for global availability. Users can check their apps for updates as the rollout continues.
