The University of Karachi has announced plans to digitize its academic, administrative, and financial operations. The initiative aims to improve student services, reduce paperwork, and increase transparency across the institution.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Wasim Qazi has established a nine-member committee to prepare a roadmap for the proposed digital transformation. The committee will review existing systems and recommend suitable solutions for modernizing university operations.
Under the planned system, students will be able to access several university services through their mobile phones. These services will include course materials, assignments, attendance records, examination schedules, results, transcripts, certificates, and library resources.
The digital platform will also support admissions, enrollment, course registration, timetables, and academic progress tracking. Students will be able to submit applications online and monitor their status without visiting university offices for routine matters.
This approach is intended to make academic services more accessible and convenient. It could also reduce delays caused by manual paperwork and administrative procedures.
Faculty and Administrative Services to Go Digital
Faculty members will also benefit from the proposed digital system. They will be able to use online tools to manage courses, student assessments, attendance, and academic records.
The University of Karachi also plans to move its administrative and financial operations to digital platforms. These operations include employee records, salary management, budgeting, procurement, and official correspondence.
Digitizing these functions could help improve record management and make administrative processes more efficient. It may also support greater transparency in financial and institutional activities.
According to a notification issued on October 11, Professor Dr. Nadeem Mahmood from the Department of Computer Science will lead the committee.
Committee to Assess IT Infrastructure and Costs
The committee will examine the university’s existing information technology infrastructure. It will recommend a suitable Learning Management System (LMS), digital applications, cybersecurity measures, and funding requirements.
The university has given the committee four working days to submit its recommendations. It must also prepare a detailed PC-I project proposal outlining the requirements for implementation.
The proposal will include estimated costs, technical needs, and a phased implementation plan. These details will help university officials evaluate the project’s scope and financial requirements.
The committee will submit its findings to the vice chancellor for further consideration. The recommendations will provide a basis for deciding how the digital transformation should proceed.
The proposed initiative could change how students, teachers, and administrative staff access university services. However, the university has not yet announced a launch date for the digital platform.
