Tragic Incident on Karakoram Highway Claims Lives and several Injured

In a tragic incident on the Karakoram Highway, a tourist bus veered off the road and plunged into a ditch in the Diamar area of Gilgit-Baltistan, resulting in the loss of five lives and leaving several others injured.

The accident occurred when a tourist coaster traveling from Islamabad to Gilgit met with a mishap at Thalchi in Gilgit.

According to reports, the ill-fated bus was carrying 25 passengers, including men, women, and children. Unfortunately, one man, one child, and three women lost their lives in the accident, while the remaining passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Promptly responding to the incident, the district administration of Gilgit and Diamar, along with Rescue 1122 and other organizations, swiftly initiated rescue operations.

The Assistant Commissioner of Jaglot confirmed the casualty figures and informed that the injured individuals were quickly transported to Gilgit for urgent medical assistance.

Efforts were made by the health department and 1122 ambulances to provide necessary aid. Emergency measures were implemented in the hospitals of Diamar and Gilgit to address the situation.

Authorities are in contact with the families of the deceased and making arrangements for the transfer of the bodies.

Expressing deep sorrow, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his condolences to the affected families and directed the relevant authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan to swiftly provide relief and ensure an efficient rescue response. He also instructed federal government departments to offer support in the rescue and relief operation, as well as provide medical assistance to the injured passengers. The prime minister emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Earlier this year, another tragic accident on the Karakoram Highway claimed the lives of at least 25 people when a passenger bus collided with a car and fell into a ditch near the Shitial area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Kohistan district. Eyewitnesses stated that the accident occurred due to overspeeding, causing both vehicles to plunge into the ditch.
