Saudi authorities have firmly denied social media claims that a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest was arrested at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
The clarification came after videos and posts circulated online claiming that a suspected suicide bomber had approached the Kaaba before being apprehended by security personnel.
Saudi security authorities said the claims being circulated about the incident were false. According to their statement, security personnel in the holy capital arrested a person for harassing passersby and spreading fear and panic among them. The individual was dealt with immediately and legal procedures were initiated.
Authorities did not identify the person who was arrested or provide details suggesting that he was carrying explosives. Reports also indicate that the case was referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal action.
The denial came as the alleged incident quickly spread across social media, with several posts presenting the arrest as a foiled suicide bombing attempt at Islam’s holiest site.
Saudi authorities urged the public to rely on official sources for information and rejected the narratives being circulated online. The official clarification makes clear that the incident involved a person who allegedly harassed passersby and caused panic, rather than a confirmed suicide bombing attempt.
The incident has attracted widespread attention because of the location involved and the speed with which the claims spread online. However, no evidence of an explosive device or suicide attack has been confirmed by Saudi authorities.
The case remains subject to the legal process following the man’s arrest and referral to the relevant authorities.
