Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has highlighted strong participation in the province’s Electric Bike Scheme for Students, with more than 1.14 million students registering for the latest phase.
According to figures shared by the chief minister, a total of 1,149,058 students have registered for the scheme. This includes 222,101 female students, reflecting significant participation from women in the initiative.
The Punjab government plans to begin distributing the electric bikes in early November. The current phase of the scheme will provide 100,000 electric bikes to students across the province.
The government opened applications for the scheme on September 5, 2026, while the deadline for submitting applications was set for October 4. The initiative is aimed at improving transportation options for students and supporting their mobility and access to educational opportunities.
Under the current financing arrangement, each electric bike has a listed price of Rs. 199,000. Students will be responsible for paying Rs. 109,000, while the provincial government will cover the remaining costs under the scheme.
Students will repay their share over a period of 36 months. The monthly installment has been set at Rs. 3,028, allowing beneficiaries to pay for the bikes through a structured payment plan.
The government has also removed the requirement for students to make a down payment under the current arrangement. In addition, it will cover insurance, mark-up and registration costs associated with the electric bikes.
Safety measures have also been included in the scheme. Students receiving electric bikes will be provided with helmets and safety rods. The government will also offer free driving training to help beneficiaries learn safe riding practices.
The scheme has attracted considerable interest from female students. The participation of more than 222,000 women in the registration process highlights the demand for affordable and accessible transport among students across Punjab.
The electric bike initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to improve student mobility. The government says the scheme will help students travel more easily while reducing some of the financial burden associated with daily transportation.
The distribution process is expected to begin in November, with eligible students receiving the bikes according to the scheme’s selection and financing procedures.
