The Pakistani rupee continued its positive trend against the US dollar on Thursday. The PKR closed at 277.01.
The local currency gained one paisa against the dollar during the latest trading session. This marked the 257th consecutive session of gains.
The PKR has maintained its upward movement since December 25, 2025. The continued improvement has strengthened expectations of further currency gains.
At the current pace, the rupee could move into the 276 range against the dollar. However, exchange rates can change based on market conditions.
The latest currency performance came alongside a significant development involving the International Monetary Fund.
The IMF reached a staff-level agreement with Pakistan on Thursday. The agreement covers the fourth review of the Extended Fund Facility.
It also includes the third review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. The agreement could unlock around $1.2 billion after approval by the IMF Executive Board.
Total disbursements under the two arrangements could reach approximately $5.7 billion. The expected funds could provide additional support to Pakistan’s external financial position.
The rupee also strengthened against several other major international currencies. It gained Rs1.20 against the British pound during the session.
The local currency increased by 39 paisas against the Australian dollar. It also gained 20 paisas against the euro.
The rupee recorded a 40-paisa improvement against the Canadian dollar. Meanwhile, it remained stable against both the UAE dirham and Saudi riyal.
According to the latest rates, the US dollar stood at around 277.0133. The euro was recorded at approximately 309.8948.
The British pound was valued at around 365.5606. The Australian dollar stood near 192.6904.
The Canadian dollar was trading around 194.3339. The UAE dirham was recorded at approximately 75.4250.
The Saudi riyal stood near 73.7876. The currency movements showed gains against several major currencies.
The continued improvement in the PKR comes as Pakistan progresses with its IMF programme. The latest agreement could support financial stability and foreign exchange conditions.
The expected IMF disbursement may also strengthen Pakistan’s external position. However, the impact will depend on approval and subsequent fund releases.
Market participants will continue monitoring developments in foreign exchange markets. They will also watch Pakistan’s reserves, external payments, and international financing.
