Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has launched the Pishtakhara Underpass project in Peshawar.
He laid the foundation stone for the project on Sunday. The underpass is part of the Peshawar Revitalisation Plan.
The plan focuses on improving major roads and transport infrastructure across the provincial capital. Phase-I includes several important routes across Peshawar.
According to the provincial government, 19 major routes have been selected for development. These roads will undergo renovation, improvement and infrastructure upgrades.
The Pishtakhara Underpass is expected to support smoother traffic movement in the area. The project is also linked with broader efforts to improve urban mobility.
Speaking at the ceremony, Afridi highlighted Peshawar’s historical importance. He described the city as the heart of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The chief minister said restoring the city remains a government priority. He also stressed the need to improve its overall appearance and infrastructure.
Afridi said the road projects would help ease traffic problems. They are also intended to make daily commuting easier for residents.
He directed officials to maintain construction quality throughout the development work. He also called for financial transparency in all projects.
The chief minister further stressed the importance of completing projects within their deadlines. Officials were told not to compromise on quality or financial discipline.
During a briefing, Afridi was informed about the financial allocation for Phase-I. The government has allocated Rs7.2 billion for the first phase.
The development plan has been divided into separate sub-phases. Phase 1-A covers nine major road routes.
These include Bacha Khan Chowk to Pajaggi Ring Road and Dalazak Road. Bacha Khan Chowk to Northern Bypass Road is also included.
Other routes include Ashraf Road to Circular Road and Hashtnagri Road. Faqirabad Road is also part of Phase 1-A.
The plan further covers Khyber Bazaar to Kohat Road and Cinema Road. LRH Road is also among the selected routes.
Ramdas Chowk to GT Road has been included in the development package. Lahore Chowk to Inam Sanam Chowk is also part of Phase 1-A.
Phase 1-B includes several additional road sections across Peshawar. These include Kohat Road to Bara Pul and University Road to Canal Road.
Bara Road to Sufion Chowk is also included in the second sub-phase. Work will also cover Swati Phatak Road to Ring Road.
Another planned connection runs from Ring Road at Achini to University Road at Spin Jumaat. Hayatabad will also receive infrastructure improvements.
The Hayatabad work includes boundary walls, main roads and municipal entry points. These upgrades are intended to improve access and urban infrastructure.
The Pishtakhara Underpass forms part of this wider infrastructure program. Authorities expect the projects to improve traffic flow across important areas of Peshawar.

The government has said the revitalisation plan will focus on better roads and modern infrastructure. It will also target improved commuting conditions for residents.
