A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight travelling from Toronto to Karachi was forced to return to the airport shortly after takeoff following a fire warning.
Flight PK-784 reportedly turned back to Toronto around 15 minutes after departure. The captain received an indication of fire in a panel associated with the aircraft’s cargo hold.
Emergency services were alerted after the warning was received. Fire brigade personnel reached the runway as a precautionary measure.
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 777. After returning to the airport, it was moved to a parking area for further inspection.
Emergency crews began examining the aircraft, including the cargo hold, to determine the reason for the fire indication.
All passengers on board were safely transferred to the airport lounge. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Authorities are continuing their inspection of the aircraft. They are expected to determine whether the warning was caused by an actual fire or a technical issue.
The incident temporarily disrupted the flight’s journey to Karachi. Further decisions regarding the aircraft and the resumption of the flight will depend on the outcome of the inspection.
Fire warnings in aircraft cargo areas are treated as serious safety matters. Airlines and airport emergency teams are required to respond immediately to such alerts.
The latest incident comes amid wider attention on PIA and Pakistan’s aviation sector.
Earlier this month, the federal government reportedly revoked the licenses of 50 pilots. Another 33 pilots were suspended following allegations involving fraudulent pilot credentials.
The Ministry of Defence disclosed the measures in a written response during Friday’s Question Hour. It said the action was taken under the Civil Aviation Rules, 1994.
The issue has previously affected Pakistan’s aviation industry and led to restrictions on Pakistani airlines in several international markets.
The ministry said restrictions imposed on PIA by the United Kingdom, European Union and United States resulted in estimated revenue losses of around Rs200 billion between August 2020 and December 2024.
PIA also lost access to the UK market during the period. The UK had been one of the airline’s most profitable international markets.
A cabinet committee led by the defence minister has been established to review the issue and related aviation concerns.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the Toronto incident will determine the cause of the fire warning on PK-784.
Passengers were safely moved away from the aircraft while emergency personnel carried out the necessary checks.
The incident highlights the importance of immediate emergency response when aircraft systems indicate a possible fire.
