Peshawar is set to get a new underpass after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi performed the groundbreaking of the Jameel Chowk Underpass. The project is part of the provincial government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and traffic flow in the city.
The underpass is being developed under the Peshawar Revitalization Plan. Authorities have set a completion deadline of 90 days for the project.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said work on the underpass would be completed before the stipulated deadline. He directed the relevant authorities to maintain the pace of construction and ensure timely completion.
Afridi said several development projects launched under the Peshawar Revitalization Plan were progressing rapidly. He added that some schemes had already been completed, while others were nearing completion.
The chief minister said the provincial government was focused on completing development projects within their assigned timelines. He said timely completion would allow residents to benefit from improved infrastructure without unnecessary delays.
The Jameel Chowk Underpass is expected to become another major infrastructure project in Peshawar. Such projects are aimed at improving traffic movement and addressing congestion at busy points across the city.
According to Afridi, development projects worth around Rs200 billion are currently underway in Peshawar under the revitalization plan. The scale of the investment reflects the government’s focus on improving roads, infrastructure and public facilities in the provincial capital.
The chief minister praised Provincial Minister for Local Government Mina Khan and officials of the Local Government Department for monitoring the development schemes.
He said regular monitoring and follow-up were important to ensure that projects remained on schedule. The government has stressed that development schemes should deliver benefits to residents as quickly as possible.
Afridi also described the current year as a year of development, construction and prosperity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the provincial government would continue focusing on infrastructure and development activities across the province.
During his remarks, the chief minister also highlighted the provincial government’s revenue performance. He claimed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa exceeded its Rs129 billion revenue target for the 2025-26 financial year.
According to Afridi, the province collected more than Rs150 billion during the financial year. The government has now set a revenue collection target of Rs180 billion for the current financial year.
The province also aims to eventually increase its annual revenue collection to Rs200 billion. The government says stronger revenue generation will help support development activities and improve its financial capacity.
The Jameel Chowk Underpass is now expected to be completed within 90 days. The chief minister has also indicated that the project could be completed even earlier than the official deadline.
Residents will be watching the construction closely as the project moves forward. Its timely completion could provide a new traffic solution at an important location in Peshawar.
The project is part of a wider development drive in the city. With around Rs200 billion worth of schemes reportedly underway, the Peshawar Revitalization Plan is expected to remain a major focus of the provincial government.
