Pakistan has secured three medals at the third International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO-2026) held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The country won one gold and two silver medals at the international competition.
Muhammad Ali from Government College University (GCU), Lahore, won a gold medal for Pakistan. Muhammad Usman and Seerat Fatima Bhatti secured silver medals, adding to Pakistan’s strong performance at the event.
Syed Shuja Haider also represented Pakistan at the Olympiad. The Pakistani students competed alongside participants from several countries and demonstrated their knowledge of nuclear science.
The competition was held from August 2 to 8 and brought together around 120 students and experts from 19 countries. Participants came from countries including China, Japan, Russia, Turkiye, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.
The International Nuclear Science Olympiad is supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It is considered an important international competition for secondary-school students interested in nuclear science and technology.
Pakistani students were selected through the Pakistan Nuclear Science Olympiad (PANSO). The initiative is organized by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) to identify and develop young scientific talent.
The selection process gives talented students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and prepare for international-level scientific competitions. It also encourages young people to explore education and careers in nuclear science and related fields.

Dr Muhammad Maqsood from the PAEC Directorate of Education and Dr Sajjad Tahir from PIEAS received a commemorative memento marking Pakistan’s selection as the next host country.
Hosting the 2027 Olympiad is expected to provide Pakistani students with greater exposure to international scientific experts and participants. It could also strengthen cooperation in nuclear science education and peaceful nuclear technology.
