Pakistani freelancers earned a record $197 million in export receipts in September 2026. This marked the highest monthly earnings recorded in the country’s history. The latest figures also reflect strong growth in Pakistan’s digital services sector.
The September inflow brought total freelance export earnings to approximately $550 million during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27. The quarter covers July, August, and September.
September earnings increased by 11% compared to August. They also rose by 49% compared to September 2025. These figures highlight the growing contribution of freelancers to Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings.
Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad shared the figures and highlighted the sector’s progress. He said Pakistan’s growing freelance economy was helping young digital professionals reach international markets. He also noted that these services generate foreign exchange without increasing the country’s debt.
Freelance Earnings Continue to Rise
Pakistan’s freelance export receipts have shown steady growth since the beginning of the current fiscal year. Freelancers earned $175.44 million in July 2026. Their combined earnings for July and August reached approximately $352 million.
The record September performance further strengthened this upward trend. First-quarter earnings increased by 46% compared to the same period last year.
During fiscal year 2025-26, Pakistani freelancers generated total export receipts of $1.76 billion. This reflects the sector’s growing importance to the national economy.
Freelance services also contribute significantly to Pakistan’s broader information technology and services exports. The country’s IT exports reached $435 million in September 2026. This was the sector’s second-highest monthly level on record.
Limited Jobs Encourage Freelancing
Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) Chairman Ibrahim Amin said the growth reflected greater participation in the international freelance market. He highlighted the increasing role of Pakistani digital professionals in serving overseas clients.
According to Amin, limited job opportunities in the domestic market have encouraged many IT graduates and professionals to pursue freelancing. This allows skilled workers to earn from international clients while supporting Pakistan’s economy.
Income from overseas projects also helps freelancers meet their personal and household expenses. The sector provides an alternative source of employment for Pakistan’s growing workforce.
Skills Development Could Support Further Growth
PAFLA has highlighted the importance of training and professional development for digital workers. Greater investment in these areas could help Pakistan strengthen its position in the global freelance market.
Improved skills and stronger support systems could also help professionals secure more international projects. This may further increase export receipts and foreign exchange earnings in the coming years.
