Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a summary for an interest-free Hajj savings scheme designed to help Pakistanis prepare financially for the rising cost of pilgrimage. The initiative will allow prospective pilgrims to save money through monthly contributions instead of arranging the entire amount at once.
The scheme has been developed jointly by the Ministry of Finance and National Savings. It is expected to use a digital system to make saving for Hajj more convenient and accessible for people across the country.
Under the proposed plan, participants will be able to choose a savings period according to their financial circumstances. This flexibility is intended to help individuals and families plan their contributions in advance and gradually build the amount required for the pilgrimage.
Monthly Savings and Flexible Withdrawals
The proposed Hajj Savings Plan will allow participants to deposit money regularly through digital payment options. By spreading contributions over time, the scheme aims to reduce the financial pressure associated with paying Hajj expenses in a single payment.
Another key feature is the proposed facility to transfer savings accounts or related arrangements to other family members. This could provide additional flexibility for families planning their pilgrimage together.
Participants will also be allowed to withdraw their deposited funds at any stage without deductions, according to the proposed scheme. This provision is intended to give savers access to their money if their financial circumstances change.
The scheme is interest-free, with the primary objective of helping people prepare for Hajj through a structured savings system.
Possible Expansion to Umrah
Officials are also considering extending the savings model to Umrah and other religious pilgrimages. However, the proposed expansion remains under consideration and has not been confirmed as part of the scheme’s initial launch.
If introduced, the model could provide another way for people to plan and manage the costs of religious travel through regular savings.
Rules and Launch Details Awaited
Detailed procedures and regulations for the Hajj Savings Plan are expected to be finalised within the next two months. The formal launch date, registration process, eligibility requirements and other participation details are expected to be announced after the rules are completed.
Until then, prospective pilgrims will need to wait for official guidance on how to open an account, select a savings period and make monthly deposits.
The initiative is intended to make Hajj financial planning more manageable for Pakistanis by encouraging advance savings and offering greater flexibility. Its practical impact will become clearer once the government announces the final rules and implementation details.
