OpenAI has announced ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a new initiative that will provide up to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers with free access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models. The program aims to accelerate scientific discovery by giving researchers powerful AI tools for data analysis, coding, literature reviews, and complex problem-solving.
The initiative will begin this summer with an initial group of 10,000 researchers before expanding to 100,000 participants by 2027. Eligible researchers from selected academic institutions with high levels of research activity will be able to apply for the program.
Researchers to Get GPT-5.6 Sol Pro
Participants accepted into the program will receive free access to OpenAI’s frontier AI models through ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, including the newly introduced GPT-5.6 Sol Pro at launch.
In addition to premium AI models, researchers will benefit from higher usage limits, larger context windows, expanded deep research capabilities, hands-on training, and technical support. OpenAI also allows every approved researcher to invite up to four collaborators from the same institution, making it easier for research teams to work together.
The company believes these tools can significantly improve research workflows across numerous disciplines.
AI to Support Scientific Research
According to OpenAI, the platform can assist researchers with a wide variety of academic tasks, including:
- Genomic analysis
- Protein modeling
- Literature reviews
- Grant proposal writing
- Scientific coding
- Data analysis
- Research publishing
By automating repetitive tasks and accelerating information processing, OpenAI hopes researchers can dedicate more time to innovation and discovery.
Privacy and Security Remain a Priority
OpenAI emphasized that workspaces created under the Academic Researchers program will include business-grade privacy and security protections.
The company also confirmed that researchers’ conversations, files, and project data will not be used to train OpenAI’s AI models by default, addressing one of the biggest concerns among academic institutions regarding confidential research.
Millions Already Use ChatGPT for Science
OpenAI revealed that approximately 1.3 million people currently use ChatGPT every week for advanced scientific and mathematical work.
Collectively, these users generate around 8.4 million messages each week, highlighting AI’s growing role in academic research, engineering, and scientific problem-solving.
The company believes expanding access to its most advanced models will further accelerate innovation across universities and research institutions worldwide.
Part of a $250 Million Research Commitment
The Academic Researchers program forms part of OpenAI’s broader commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support scientific research and discovery.
The investment includes several ongoing initiatives, including the $50 million NextGenAI program and collaboration with the US Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, both designed to advance AI-assisted scientific breakthroughs.
OpenAI says the latest initiative demonstrates its long-term commitment to helping researchers solve complex global challenges using artificial intelligence.
Not OpenAI’s First Research Initiative
This is not the company’s first AI platform designed specifically for researchers.
Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced Prism, a free AI-powered workspace that helps researchers write papers, manage citations, work with equations, analyze academic literature, and collaborate more efficiently.
Unlike the new Academic Researchers program, Prism is available to anyone with a personal ChatGPT account, making AI-powered academic writing accessible to a much wider audience.
For universities already using ChatGPT Edu, OpenAI said access under the new Academic Researchers initiative will be integrated directly into the institution’s existing workspace, allowing researchers to use the new features without disrupting their current workflows.
As competition in AI-powered scientific research continues to intensify, OpenAI’s latest initiative positions ChatGPT as an increasingly important tool for academic institutions seeking to accelerate research, improve collaboration, and unlock new discoveries.
