Karachi is set to host the 10th National Road Cycling Championship from October 9 to 11. Cyclists from across Pakistan will participate in the three-day competition.
The championship will take place at Bahria Town Karachi. According to the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF), the opening activities will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
The event will bring together cyclists from different regions and institutions. Participants will compete in multiple categories during the national championship.
The competition will include men’s, women’s, junior, masters and para-cycling events. These categories will provide opportunities for athletes from different age groups and backgrounds.
Teams from several provinces and institutions will participate in the championship. The participating teams include Army, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad will also be represented. Other participating teams include Kareng Aidak and the Pakistan Cycling Academy.
Cyclists from other institutions and cycling teams are also expected to compete. Their participation will add further competition to the national event.
This year, the Pakistan Cycling Federation has introduced an Open Masters category. The new category will allow cyclists from Karachi and other areas to compete at the national level.
The inclusion of the Open Masters category is expected to provide more opportunities for experienced cyclists. It will also allow riders from Karachi to compete alongside athletes from other parts of the country.
Para-cycling will also be part of this year’s championship. The category will provide cyclists with disabilities an opportunity to compete nationally.
The federation said arrangements have been completed for visiting cyclists and officials. Accommodation and other facilities have been arranged at Bahria Town Karachi.
The closing ceremony will be held on October 11. The prize distribution ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the same day.
Pakistan Cycling Federation President Syed Azhar Ali Shah highlighted the importance of national sporting events. He said such activities can engage young people in positive pursuits.
Shah also emphasized the need to continue sporting activities under current circumstances. He said young athletes need opportunities to display their abilities at national events.
The PCF president also called for greater media coverage of the championship. He said media support can help promote cycling and encourage athletes.
According to Shah, wider coverage can also highlight the achievements of Pakistani cyclists. The championship will therefore provide athletes with a national platform to demonstrate their skills.
