The Pakistani government has rejected international media reports about Imran Khan’s jail conditions. It described allegations of mistreatment and inadequate medical care as “misleading propaganda.”
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said official prison records show that the former prime minister continues to receive facilities allowed under prison rules.
The ministry also rejected claims that Khan is being subjected to punitive isolation. It said he is housed in an exclusive seven-cell compound with sleeping, sanitation and exercise facilities.
According to the government, Khan has access to visitors, telephone calls, reading material and television. He has also been provided exercise equipment and home-cooked food.
The ministry further disputed claims that Khan has been cut off from his family. It cited prison records showing hundreds of meetings and visitor entries during his imprisonment.
Around 200 interview sessions have reportedly been recorded. These involved more than 900 visitor entries, including Khan’s sisters, relatives, lawyers, doctors and political representatives.
The government said Khan was also allowed weekly meetings with his wife. According to the ministry, the latest such meeting was recorded on August 4.
Prison records also reportedly document communication with family members through telephone, landline and WhatsApp. These communications included relatives living outside Pakistan.
The ministry cited a March 21 call between Khan and one of his sons. It also said his sisters visited him on August 18, 19 and 25.
The government also rejected allegations that Khan has been denied proper medical treatment. It said the PTI founder has undergone approximately 30 medical examinations since his imprisonment.
According to the ministry, specialist teams and medical boards have been involved in his medical assessments. Doctors from PIMS, Shifa International, Shaukat Khanum and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital reportedly participated in the examinations.
The prison doctor has also continued to conduct regular medical assessments, according to the government. Authorities said Khan has received specialist treatment for a retinal condition.
His treatment reportedly included five anti-VEGF injections, retinal imaging, medication and follow-up assessments. The government said these measures were part of his ongoing medical care.
The ministry said medical evaluations conducted in July and on August 21 described Khan as “oriented” and “stable.” It added that no acute or unmanaged deterioration was recorded in those assessments.
The government also cited comments attributed to Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan. According to the ministry, she described him as “100 percent fit” after assessing his condition.
The government said Dr Uzma Khan recorded Khan’s blood pressure at 120/80. She also reportedly said that his eye condition had almost completely healed.
The ministry further maintained that Supreme Court instructions concerning Khan’s medical examination and treatment had been implemented. It said his sister was present during the examination.
Authorities also referred to Supreme Court directions concerning the public disclosure of Khan’s health information. According to the government, restrictions were placed on sharing his medical condition and reports publicly.
The ministry said Khan’s family, PTI and associated lawyers were directed not to share his medical information with the media or public while further proceedings remained pending.
The government argued that Khan’s health should be assessed through clinical evidence and medical records. It said judicial directions should also be considered when evaluating his medical treatment.
Officials further maintained that restrictions on prison visits and communications can be imposed under jail regulations, court orders or security requirements.
The government said such restrictions should not automatically be presented as a complete denial of access. It maintained that official records provide a different picture from the allegations contained in some international media reports.
The issue has gained renewed attention as questions continue to be raised about Khan’s treatment during his imprisonment. The government has now sought to counter those concerns by presenting details from prison and medical records.
Authorities said the available evidence shows that Khan has continued to receive family access, communication facilities and medical treatment within the applicable rules.
The government maintained that claims about his jail conditions should therefore be evaluated against official records rather than political claims or media reports.
