Google is facing criticism over a new education policy that could restrict students’ access to its search engine. The changes may affect schools that choose not to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
The company announced the policy on November 3, 2026. Under the new rules, Google Search and its AI services will be disabled by default for school-managed K–12 student accounts.
School administrators will decide which services students can access. However, schools that completely reject AI tools may also lose access to Google Search.
The main concern is that Google does not currently offer a traditional search option without integrated AI features. This means schools cannot keep Search enabled while completely removing its AI functions.
The policy has attracted criticism from several American political figures. They argue that the company is using its strong position in the search market to encourage schools to adopt AI.
Google Requires Schools to Choose AI or Search Access
Google announced the changes through a blog post titled “Designing Responsible AI for Learning.”
The updated policy covers several services, including Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search.
All these services will initially remain disabled for K–12 student accounts. School administrators can activate individual services according to their requirements.
However, Google has confirmed that traditional Search cannot be separated from its integrated AI features. Consequently, schools that prohibit AI completely will also lose Search access through managed student accounts.
Google Vice President for Education Chris Phillips explained that Search and AI features have become closely connected. Students affected by the restrictions will receive a message stating that the service is unavailable.
The changes are expected to take effect in early 2027.
Google Introduces Guided Learning for Students
Alongside the restrictions, Google has introduced a new AI-powered feature called Guided Learning.
The feature aims to help students understand academic subjects through explanations and step-by-step guidance. Instead of simply providing answers, it encourages students to work through problems.
Guided Learning will be available through Google Classroom. It will also become part of AI Mode and AI Overviews in Google Search.
For example, students solving physics questions or completing writing assignments can receive guided explanations. The feature is designed to improve understanding rather than encourage copying answers.
Google says Guided Learning is already available globally through Classroom. A pilot program for its Search integration will begin at selected American schools in November.
US Politicians Criticize Google’s Decision
The announcement has triggered criticism from several prominent American political figures.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused Google of using its search market dominance to pressure schools. Senator Bernie Sanders also criticized the decision, describing it as extortion.
Former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan raised similar concerns. She argued that allowing powerful companies to control essential services creates risks for consumers.
The criticism follows previous antitrust proceedings involving Google’s search and advertising businesses.
Google Defends Its Updated Education Policy
Google has defended the changes, saying they will give schools greater control over AI access.
The company explained that administrators can decide which services students should use. It also highlighted Guided Learning as a way to encourage responsible AI use.
Google said educators have raised concerns about students relying on AI to complete assignments. The new feature aims to promote learning through explanations and interactive guidance.
However, the company has not directly explained why schools cannot use Search without AI features.
The policy also comes amid wider concerns about AI’s impact on children. Several US lawmakers and organizations have raised questions about student safety and responsible technology use.
