US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Trump described Pakistan as a “great country” and called Shehbaz Sharif a “terrific man.” He made the remarks while discussing the Pakistan-India conflict of May 2025.
Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly session on September 22, Trump highlighted conflicts he said his administration helped settle. He included the Pakistan-India conflict among those examples.
Trump said Shehbaz Sharif had thanked him for his role in ending the military escalation. He also claimed the intervention helped save 30 million lives.
“The prime minister of Pakistan — terrific man — said that Donald Trump was responsible for saving 30 million lives,” Trump said during his speech.
Trump also said he had helped settle eight conflicts since returning to office. He said several countries involved had sent letters thanking him for his efforts.
The US president linked his diplomatic approach to relationships with foreign leaders. He also mentioned trade measures and tariff threats as tools used during negotiations.
The Pakistan-India conflict began escalating in April 2025. Military exchanges followed between the two countries before a ceasefire was announced in May.
Trump has repeatedly credited his administration with helping bring the fighting to an end. Pakistan’s leadership has also publicly acknowledged Trump’s role in the ceasefire.
However, India’s position has differed from Trump’s account. Indian officials have maintained that the ceasefire resulted from direct communication between India and Pakistan.
India has rejected the suggestion that the United States mediated the agreement. This remains a point of difference between the two countries’ accounts of the events.
Trump’s latest remarks continue his public praise for Pakistan’s leadership. He has previously spoken positively about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
During the UNGA address, Trump focused on his administration’s foreign policy record. His speech covered several international conflicts and other global issues.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is attending the UNGA session in New York. He is scheduled to address the 193-member General Assembly on September 25.
