Basant May Return to Punjab in Late January

Basant celebrations could return to Punjab in late January next year as the provincial government considers moving the festival ahead of February.

The colourful kite-flying festival returned to Punjab this year after a long gap. Celebrations continued for three days and attracted significant public attention.

Officials are now considering an earlier date for next year’s Basant celebrations. The move is reportedly linked to the expected start of Ramadan in February.

The Punjab government is therefore considering holding Basant during the final days of January. However, the exact date has not yet been finalized.

The final schedule will be announced after formal approval from the provincial government. Authorities are expected to decide the date after reviewing relevant arrangements and conditions.

The government is also considering allowing the manufacture and use of kites and kite string. These activities would reportedly be permitted under a formal regulatory framework.

Officials have stressed that Basant will not be held without proper rules and safety regulations. Kite flying, kite manufacturing and the use of kite string will be regulated by the authorities.

The government is expected to finalize the rules before organized kite-flying activities resume across Punjab. These measures are aimed at ensuring that celebrations take place under controlled conditions.

Authorities are also expected to review the situation after the ongoing flood conditions and monsoon season. Further decisions on Basant arrangements could follow afterward.

The possible return of Basant has generated interest among kite enthusiasts and residents, particularly in Lahore, where the festival has traditionally attracted large crowds.

However, the government has not yet issued a final confirmation regarding the date. The proposal remains subject to approval and the completion of the required regulatory arrangements.

If approved, Punjab could once again see large-scale Basant celebrations as early as late January next year.
