The federal government has announced a comprehensive plan to ensure uninterrupted telecom services across Pakistan during the ongoing monsoon season, aiming to strengthen emergency communications and support disaster response efforts. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has directed all mobile network operators to keep their networks fully operational and enhance the security of telecom infrastructure amid forecasts of heavy rainfall and flooding.
The initiative is designed to minimize communication disruptions during emergencies and ensure that citizens can access critical services throughout the rainy season. Authorities believe reliable telecom connectivity will play a vital role in coordinating rescue operations, facilitating emergency response, and keeping the public informed during severe weather events.
According to the Ministry of IT, all mobile network operators have been instructed to maintain uninterrupted voice and data services while taking preventive measures to protect telecom infrastructure from damage caused by floods, heavy rains, and other natural disasters.
Officials said operators have also been directed to closely monitor their networks and deploy technical teams where necessary to respond quickly to any outages. The ministry emphasized that maintaining stable communication services is essential for both public safety and disaster management.
As part of the government’s preparedness plan, emergency call centres for Rescue 1122 have been activated in all four provinces. The upgraded emergency response system will allow citizens to seek immediate assistance during floods, landslides, and other monsoon-related emergencies.
The provincial emergency response centres will remain directly connected to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) control centre, enabling faster coordination between provincial authorities and federal disaster management agencies.
Officials said all emergency calls received through the 1122 service during disaster situations will be responded to promptly. Close coordination between emergency responders and telecom operators is expected to ensure uninterrupted communication throughout rescue and relief operations.
The Ministry of IT also confirmed that provincial emergency centres will work closely with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to maintain reliable telecom connectivity during emergencies. The PTA will monitor network performance and coordinate with mobile operators to address any service disruptions as quickly as possible.
The government’s latest preparations build on lessons learned from last year’s monsoon season, when Pakistan experienced widespread flooding and severe weather across several regions.
According to ministry data, the country’s emergency response system handled approximately 27.8 million emergency calls during last year’s floods and other natural disasters. Despite the challenging conditions, only 7 percent of telecom sites across Pakistan were affected by the extreme weather.
Officials described the performance as evidence of the resilience of Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure. They added that nearly 99 percent of the affected telecom sites were successfully restored within one month, helping to re-establish communication services in flood-hit areas.
The ministry believes these improvements have strengthened Pakistan’s ability to maintain communications during large-scale emergencies. Mobile operators have since invested in additional backup systems, infrastructure protection, and emergency response mechanisms to further improve network resilience.
The government has reiterated that uninterrupted telecom services remain a top priority during the current monsoon season. Reliable communication is considered essential for emergency responders, government agencies, healthcare providers, and millions of citizens who may require assistance during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.
Officials said they will continue monitoring the situation throughout the monsoon season and work closely with telecom companies, the PTA, the NDMA, and provincial authorities to ensure communication networks remain operational.
The Ministry of Information Technology reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining nationwide telecom connectivity, emphasizing that uninterrupted communication is critical for protecting lives, supporting disaster response efforts, and ensuring timely access to emergency services during the country’s annual monsoon season.
