Around 300,000 residents in Karachi are expected to benefit from improved water supply after the rehabilitation of the Garden Water Pumping Station, which had remained non-operational for more than two decades.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the rehabilitated facility on Sunday, with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) completing the restoration work at a cost of Rs. 30.25 million.
The pumping station was originally installed in 2005 but remained unused because it did not have an electricity connection. Following its rehabilitation, water supply from the facility is set to resume immediately.
Garden Pumping Station Restored
The rehabilitation project included repairs to the station’s civil structure, panel room, staff room and boundary walls.
Two 125-horsepower electric motors were also repaired, while two new motor control boards were installed to improve the facility’s operational capacity.
The project further included the supply and installation of PVC and low-tension cables required to restore the pumping station.
Several Karachi Areas to Benefit
The restored facility will supply water through a 24-inch pipeline to several densely populated areas, including Nishter Road, Garden, Ghas Mandi, Ghanche Para, Ranchore Line and Ramswami.
Water will also be supplied to Mirza Adam Khan Road, Dhobi Ghat, Lyari and surrounding localities.
An 18-inch pipeline will provide water to Usmanabad, Badshahi Road, Azeem Plaza and nearby areas.
The restoration is expected to improve water availability in Garden, Soldier Bazaar, Lyari and other adjoining neighborhoods.
300,000 Residents Expected to Benefit
Mayor Murtaza Wahab said approximately 300,000 Karachi residents would benefit from the restoration of the pumping station.
The rehabilitation is expected to strengthen water distribution in several areas that have faced supply challenges and improve the overall availability of water in the affected localities.
The project is part of efforts to restore and upgrade Karachi’s water infrastructure and make better use of existing facilities.
