Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day celebrations have been marred by dangerous incidents of celebratory aerial f!ring, with at least two people reportedly d!ead and hundreds injured across major cities.
The incidents occurred as people gathered to celebrate Independence Day, with authorities reporting injuries linked to aerial f!ring and other forms of reckless celebration.
The latest incidents have once again raised serious concerns over public safety and the continued use of weapons during national celebrations.
Aerial F!ring Claims Lives
According to officials, a man and an infant d!ed after being struck during incidents of aerial f!ring.
A woman who was brought to hospital with a gunshot wound also later d!ed. Police subsequently said her death resulted from accidental f!ring.
The incidents highlight the potentially fatal consequences of firing weapons into the air in crowded residential and public areas.
86 Injured in Karachi
In Karachi alone, Edhi had earlier reported 86 people injured following aerial f!ring incidents across different parts of the city.
The injured included 59 men, 17 children and 10 women.
The incidents were reported from several areas, including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defence.
Several injured people were shifted to major hospitals for medical treatment.
Police Crackdown Begins
Police launched a crackdown against people allegedly involved in aerial f!ring.
In Karachi’s East district, 10 suspects were arrested, while weapons allegedly used in the incidents were recovered.
The arrests were made in the jurisdictions of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Sachal, Gulistan-i-Johar and SITE Super Highway police stations.
Police in the West district separately arrested three suspects over alleged aerial f!ring incidents.
Authorities have repeatedly imposed restrictions on aerial f!ring during Independence Day celebrations, but the practice continues to occur in different parts of the country.
Concerns Over Reckless Celebrations
The latest incidents have sparked renewed criticism of dangerous behaviour during Independence Day celebrations.
Reports of disturbances and other incidents also emerged from Lahore, Multan and Karachi, adding to concerns about public safety during the festivities.
While Independence Day is traditionally celebrated with flags, decorations, fireworks and patriotic gatherings, the use of weapons and reckless behaviour can turn celebrations into dangerous situations for innocent bystanders.
Last year, three people were reportedly k!lled and more than 100 injured in celebratory gunfire during Independence Day celebrations.
The latest casualties have once again highlighted the need for strict enforcement against aerial f!ring and greater public awareness to ensure that national celebrations do not result in preventable tragedies.
